The Heat Gun Is On!

And there are a ton of things you can do with it!

One of the greatest discoveries of all time is fire. So, it’s not hard to imagine that one of the greatest power tools of all time is the heat gun! As any hobbyist, weekend warrior, contractor, painter and plumber can tell you, a heat gun is indispensable. Here are just some of things you can do with this versatile tool:

Shrink Tubing – Tidy up electronic wiring and other connections with shrink tubing and a heat gun.

Drying Paint – If you’ve just painted a wall or surface and there’s more work to be done, you may risk ruining the paint. A heat gun can make quick work of drying paint, saving time and hassle!

Stripping paint – Use a heat gun to strip paint from walls, furniture and other woodwork. It’s more environmentally friendly and a lot less messy compared to chemical solvents.

Softening adhesives – Want to remove a bumper sticker from your car? Use a heat gun and then just peel it off. Still some residue? Just apply a little WD-40 to get it off. This process also works great for other stickers and labels. Just make sure the base item can take the heat!

Desoldering – With the right attachment, the heat can be streamlined to the particular component that needs desoldering.

Upholstering furniture – When using vinyl, applying heat allows the vinyl to be stretched around the respective piece of furniture.

Weld plastics – Using a specific nozzle and plastic welding rods, you can weld a variety of plastics, including PVC pipe and floor tiles.

Restore automotive trim – quickly and easily get your automotive trim back in black by applying heat.

Join tarps – Need to line a pond, create an awning or provide ground cover for a large tent? Overlay two tarps, heat the edges using a slit nozzle and then immediately press together the sides using a roller.

Thaw frozen pipes – Once you pinpoint where the frozen pipe is, apply gradual heat using the heat gun to restore waterflow. Note: do not heat the pipe too rapidly as this may compromise the integrity of the pipe and cause it to burst.

Re-stick molding and floor tiles/remove floor tiles – simply heat the molding and adhesive to rejuvenate their bonding properties. You can also heat up tiles and the adhesives for easy removal.

Tint windows – Use a smoothing tool and heat gun to heat-shrink the tinting film to windows.

Bend PVC pipe – Using a special wire coil and heat gun, plumbers can bend PVC into almost any angle without having to use adhesives or elbow joints. This also saves time because they don’t have to wait for any glue to try before checking the seals since there are none!

Harbor Freight carries the 1500 Watt Dual Temperature Heat Gun 572°/1112°. This versatile dual temperature heat gun is ideal for numerous tasks, including the ones mentioned above, and features superior coil design that heats materials more quickly than other heat guns on the market. The 9 Pc Heat Gun Accessory Kit is also available. The kit provides four nozzles to control the flow of heat and expand the applications, scraper handle with three interchangeable spring steel heads and a putty knife.

Be aware that heating certain compounds and materials may give off strong orders or noxious fumes. Always use a heat gun in a well-ventilated area and wear appropriate protective gear, including heat-resistant gloves, protective eyewear and a respiratory mask. Keep a fire extinguisher close by in case anything flammable (e.g. saw dust) catches fire while using the heat gun.

For all heat gun options, be sure to visit your local Harbor Freight Tools store. And leave a comment for what you use a heat gun for!
