10 in. 2.5 HP Tile/Brick Saw

The remodeler’s best friend

Growing up, we were taught not to mix water and electricity. So, when it comes to remodeling projects, we may be hesitant at first to use a tile saw which utilizes water and electricity—and a diamond rim rotating blade! But you needn’t worry because there’s no better way to cut a voluminous amount of tile or other masonry materials than with a tile saw, also known as a “wet saw.”

The Chicago Electric 10 in. 2.5 HP Tile/Brick Saw is a must-have for remodeling with tile, brink and other masonry.

The two-position cutting head enables you to adjust the blade for a variety of materials up to 3-1/2 inches thick and 24 inches in length or width. You can also make 22.5° and 45° bevel cuts. The tile saw includes a 3-gallon per minute water pump and high-impact ABS water tub that’s easy to clean. Additional features include a powerful dual capacity motor with sealed bearings and thermal overload protection, heavy-duty cast alloy column and cutting head for reduced vibration and an oversized steel frame with a precision linear bar system for smooth operation. The folding stand with wheels and diamond blade shown are sold separately.

If you’re never used a tile saw before, here are a few tips to get you started.

Position the tile saw on a solid and level surface. Sawing on a wobbly table could result in inaccurate cuts and potential injury.

Fill the tile saw’s reservoir with clean water—use a garden hose or pitcher. Make sure that the water pump is completely submerged.

Position the tile onto the cutting board. Adjust the fence so the blade lines up with the pencil mark demarcating where the cut should be. Keep the widest part of the tile between the fence and the blade so you can keep your hand as far from the blade as possible.

For cutting tiles along the diagonal, position a miter guide or speed square between the tile and the fence.

When making partial cuts, for example, an L-shaped cut to fit around an electrical outlet, set up the cut the same way but only feed the tile far enough into the blade as needed.

Position the tile, turn on the saw and make sure water is being sprayed onto the blade before cutting the tile.

Use a steady grip to feed the tile slowly into the blade, especially toward the edges of the tile as this is where the most breakage can occur. Do not force the cut.

When the cut is complete, carefully pull the pieces away and turn off the saw. Position the next tile for cutting and repeat the steps above.

Additional safety notes:

The water keeps the blade and tile cool and helps prevent particles from flying around. The water should flow freely around the entire cutting edge of the blade. If not, don’t begin cutting as this could damage the blade as well as the tile and potentially cause serious injury.

Always keep your hands away from the line of the cut to prevent injury.

Always wear safety glasses to prevent particles from injuring your eyes.

To insure electrical safety, it’s best to create a “drip loop.” See the illustrations above. Notice how the loop is lower than the outlet so water does not drip into the outlet.

The Chicago Electric 10 in. 2.5 HP Tile/Brick Saw is an unbeatable value—many customers have expressed how it’s cheaper to buy this tile saw than to rent one from a big box store.  The only problem is there will be no excuse not to tackle more remodeling jobs! Saw blades a cut above …

There are several considerations to make when purchasing a saw blade. First  and foremost is the kind of cutting you’ll be performing. In general, saw blades are designed to deliver the best results for a particular application, for example: ripping, cross-cutting, rough cutting, finishing, etc. Another key consideration is the type of material you’ll be cutting—wood, plyboard, non-ferrous metal, cement board, etc.

For the DIYer and professional alike, tooth count is also important. As a general rule of thumb, the more teeth or cutting tips (e.g. 60T = 60 teeth), the smoother the cut. A lower tooth count translates into more material removed but a rougher finish, like framing work.

Other considerations include size of the gullet (rounded space between tips cut into the blade plate), kerf width, tooth configuration and the tooth angle (a.k.a. hook angle).

Whether you’re building pictures frames for a hobby, a new deck for backyard entertainment or a new house for a client, you’ll want saw blades that stay sharp and consistently deliver high-end results.

Admiral is a line of professional-quality saw blades for those who don’t want to pay a premium but still demand performance that’s a cut above! Check out their current selection:

Turn Your Car into a Star!

Reupholster your door panel quickly and easily with a little help from Harbor Freight!

It doesn’t always take a lot of work to increase the value of your vehicle, improve its look and make it more enjoyable to drive! Here’s a simple project that will do just that and save you a ton of money compared to getting it done professionally—reupholstering your car door panels.

First, you’ll have to remove the door panel. A lot of do-it-yourselfers try to use tools they have like screwdrivers to pop the clips and that’s a mistake because you can end up doing more damage!

Harbor Freight has a great set of tools designed specifically for this project—the Upholstery and Trim Tool Set 5 Pc. And the price? Hey, it’s Harbor Freight!

The set contains everything you need to remove door panels and more from your vehicle. Made with heat-treated, polished stainless steel blades, the tool set features wide blades to reduce marring or damage to your vehicle during panel removal. With rubber handles and knurled grips for control and leverage, this upholstery tool set is ideal for the car enthusiast and auto body specialist alike—and perfect to use for this project!

Here are the other materials you’ll need:

Once the panel is off, remove the old skin, which may require cleaning off glue and/or staples as best you can using sandpaper and needle nose pliers respectively.

Trace your door panel onto the foam with the marker and cut it out with your scissors. Test fit it on your panel to make sure it lines up.

Lay your foam down on a flat area such as a workbench. Take the interior side of the door panel and lay it face down on the foam.

Spray the panel side of the foam with adhesive. Also spray the panel with adhesive. Let the two surfaces sit until the adhesive gets tacky. Once tacky, apply the foam to the panel and let dry.

After the foam has dried to the panel, cut out the openings.

Lay the vinyl or duck cotton down on the table face down. Note: take care not to get any adhesive on the material at this point.

Loosely trace around the panel leaving a 2–3 inch gap around the entire panel and cut out the material.

Apply adhesive to the back of the material and let it get tacky. Also apply adhesive to the foam on the panel and let it get tacky as well. Once both surfaces are tacky, apply the material to the panel. Pull the material taught and cut where needed to ensure a proper fit.

If you’re happy with the fit, slice your openings—always start small and increase your cuts.

Reapply any clips and/or weather-stripping to the panel.

Put the panel back on.

Reattach handle trim, window controls, etc.

Do a little victory dance and treat yourself to an ice-cold beverage for a job well done!

Note: you can get quite creative with the material you select. Your local fabric/upholstery store will have tons of options!

Get Moving with Harbor Freight

Moving can be an extremely stressful experience. But whether you’re moving across town or across the country, a little bit of planning and preparation will go a long way in making your next move smooth—and save you time and money in the process!

Here are a few suggestions:

Make a list of what needs to be done
Disconnecting utilities, supplies to purchase, etc. When you’re in the middle of moving, it’s easy to get sidetracked or forgetful, but your trusty list will keep things in order!

Have plenty of supplies
You’ll need the basics like pens, tape, color-coded labels and most of all … boxes! Get plenty of boxes—more than you think you’ll need! Most moving supply companies will buy back unused boxes so there’s no reason not to get extras. On the day of the move, keep ten boxes aside ready for bedding, clothing and cleaning supplies.

Wardrobe boxes
Not only do these large upright boxes make moving clothes a lot easier, but you can put comforters, towels and other bulky items in the bottom portion. Just make sure the boxes aren’t too heavy to lift!

Tip: measure the clothes in your closet and then find
out how wide the wardrobe boxes are so you’ll know
how many you’ll need.

Color coding and grouping
Pick a color for each room, for example, yellow for the kitchen. Put the respective color labels on the boxes designated for that room. If you’re using movers, put a matching color label on the door of the room in your new location so they’ll know where to put the boxes.

Move lamps with lightbulbs, bookends with books, extension cords with appliances, cable cords with the TV, etc. It will make unpacking and getting set up a lot easier!

Pack ahead
Waiting until the last minute can be overwhelming and there’s no reason why you can’t pack in advance those items you don’t use day to day. Also, if you have three TVs in the house, pack up two of them and live with the one TV for a few weeks—or you could pack up all three and the family could spend more time talking to each other … nah!

Luggage, baskets and duffle bags
Fill ‘em up with sheets, towels, documents and the clothes you’ll want immediate access to when you arrive at your new home! It will be a lot easier to keep track of and spot a suitcase during a move compared to one of several dozen cardboard boxes.

Sandwich bags
Use them for holding small parts like screws, nuts, bolts and brackets. They can then be taped to and packed with their corresponding items or kept in your purse or backpack so you’ll have quick access when you arrive at the new location.

Take photos of how electronics are set-up
It can be frustrating to get into your new home and then not be able to hook up all the electronics you depend on! A picture will solve that problem!

A picture says a thousand instructions

Vacuum seal out-of-season clothing
It will take up less space when moving and then can go directly into storage in your new home.

Make your last grocery shopping trip two weeks prior to moving
Dried goods can be packed and moved, but perishables … well, they’re perishable! Make a point of eating the food in the refrigerator (and freezer) for the few weeks leading up to the move—the more you use, the less you’ll have to throw out which is a waste of money. Also, it’s a good idea to let your refrigerator defrost a day or two before moving so you can wipe up any excess liquid and not have to unpack a stinky, wet mess in your new home!

Working with Concrete, Masonry or Other Tough Materials? It’s Hammer Time!

You’ve decided to tackle a construction or renovation project on your own that involves drilling or breaking down concrete, masonry or other tough materials. If that’s the case, you’re going to need either a rotary hammer, demolition/breaker hammer or combination hammer.

For those new to working with concrete, a rotary hammer is a power tool that combines rotation with a hammering action to penetrate concrete. A demolition/breaker hammer chips or breaks up concrete—they can also be oriented for either vertical or horizontal positioning. A combination hammer can drill into or break up concrete. Note that the versatile Bauer rotary hammers listed below function as combination hammers.

When choosing a rotary hammer, knowing the size holes you’ll be drilling and the scope of your project will help you determine which tool will provide optimal performance. Bigger isn’t necessarily better though you may want to consider investing in the next size up to give you the flexibility of drilling larger holes if needed and not pushing the tool to extremes which could eventually lead to failure.

The same goes for demolition/breaker hammers. The 15 Amp 35 lb. Pro Demolition Hammer may be well suited for breaking up footings but for breaking up an entire driveway, the 15 Amp 70 Lb. Pro Breaker Hammer could be a better choice.

There are a variety of bits that can be utilized depending on the task, material and relative volume. Switching between bits is also quick and easy. The majority of rotary hammers employ one of three bit-holding systems: SDS-Plus®, SDS-Max® and Spline. SDS-Plus is generally used for smaller bits (3/16” to ¾”). SDS-Max is used for larger bits (½” to 1-3/4”) and is superior in design to Spline (3/8” to 1-3/8”) which is gradually being phased out.

While working with concrete and other hard materials isn’t complicated, improper technique and application can lead to bits breaking and that money you saved doing the project yourself may be spent replacing bits! Causes for bit failure include: working at an improper angle, blank-firing (hammer piston strikes the top of the bit without the tip having proper contact with the work piece or material), not warming the bit up with light or moderate breaking first in cold temperatures, mechanical damage like scratches or gouges, poor lubrication and corrosion.

Additionally, using the wrong bit for the wrong job is a surefire way to damage a bit, not to mention create a potentially dangerous situation—always use the appropriate bit for the task at hand! Seek out experienced users or do research on the Internet—there are a ton of videos, blogs and other resources to guide you. And be sure to follow all guidelines for maintenance and storage.
