A Guide to Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse

Zombie-Protection

Surviving an onslaught of zombies doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg! In fact, you can keep all your limbs neatly intact with just a few select items from Harbor Freight Tools. From weapons to equipment, Harbor Freight is the one stop shop for all your survival needs, but you can’t carry everything when you’re on the run from the undead! So, this handy guide will run down the most essential tools you need to get to the military outpost/survivor camp/shopping mall stronghold alive.

dawn3

First things first, you need a weapon.  Getting anywhere will be dangerous at best and suicide at worst. If you want any chance at all, you’ll need to be equipped with a weapon that is lightweight, powerful and doesn’t require reloading. For this situation, the 20 oz. Solid Steel “Antishock” Pro Rip Hammer (Item #: 60517) will serve you best. The oil-resistant comfort grip minimizes muscle fatigue so you can handle a whole group of zombies with ease. And the solid steel rip claw is designed to withstand rigorous use, even if it’s smashing zombies in the noggin. Be careful here because most people might be tempted to go with the 8 oz. Stubby Claw Hammer (Item #: 95929) because of its portability. However, while the Pro Rip Hammer might be a bit heavier, it has the leverage you need to break through the skulls of the undead or to pry open boarded up windows in a hurry. In fact, it couldn’t hurt to pick up two hammers, either as an extra for a partner or one for each hand so you can deal out double the carnage.

Another great choice is the 18″ Machete with Serrated Blade (tem #: 62113). The razor sharp machete also features a nonslip comfort grip and can be easily accessible when stored in the included nylon sheath. This weapon is ideal for hacking through foliage as well as zombie necks. And speaking of hand to hand combat, you can’t go wrong with the 8″ Survival/Hunting Knife (Item #: 90714).  The shorter blade offers more control over the machete which can come in handy in case you need to remove clothing to tourniquet a wound while the built-in compass will keep you and your group on track. You’ll need to keep these blades sharp too so be sure to pick up a Combination Sharpening Stone (Item #: 7345) as well. Dull blades can easily become stuck in a skull or other decomposing body part, leaving you helpless and without a weapon.

Survival is all in the details. In a world where rules and laws no longer have any meaning, you need to be on constant alert for threats both alive and undead. The Ultra Ear Sound Amplifier (Item #:  66577) fits comfortably behind either ear and provides ultra sensitive hearing to prevent anyone (or anything) from sneaking up on your camp. This handy device features tone and volume adjustment so you can keep an ear out in almost any environment. Granted, the amplifier is battery operated, which brings up another good point…

Batteries. You can’t have too many. You never know what type of tool or equipment might require batteries and in a zombie apocalypse, batteries will basically be like currency. Luckily, Harbor Freight carries a wide variety. The 24 Piece AA Alkaline Batteries (Item #: 61271) are good general purpose batteries to have on hand but you’ll want to pick up at least a few packs of the 4 Piece AA NiMH Rechargeable Batteries (Item #: 61269) as well. They’re environmentally friendly (which is still important even in a zombified world) and these batteries can be recharged up to 800 times. Along with the 5 Watt Foldable Solar Panel Charger (Item #: 60449), all you need is direct sunlight to get those batteries back to full capacity. Harbor Freight offers the following size batteries to fit a variety of needs in both alkaline and rechargeable NiMH:

You also need to think about protection from the elements and debris as well as from the vicious undead so be sure to pick up some Cold Weather Work Gloves (Item #: 96606 and 96612). There’s a very good chance you’ll be outdoors at least until you find some shelter and the 40 gram fleece Thinsulate lining on these gloves provides 10 times the warmth of standard fleece. These gloves are perfect for reloading your shotgun quickly in windy, cold or wet conditions. Also grab a pack of 100 Nitrile Powder-Free Gloves (Item #: 68498) for any less pragmatic survivors you may come across. The Nitrile hand gloves offer three times more puncture resistance than latex and vinyl, providing extra protection against sharp metal objects in dilapidated city ruins as well as zombie bites. The last thing you need is an infected person in your group. That won’t end well, trust me.

The bottom line is you can never be too careful when it comes to prepping for the zombie apocalypse. Here are some miscellaneous items that could be life-saving without taking up much space in your pack:

With this handy list of essentials, you’ll have a fighting chance at escaping the zombie horde while protecting your group of survivors… if you’re lucky enough to find any. Whatever you do, don’t get caught unprepared. Get to your nearest Harbor Freight store now to stock up and save a bundle!

Harbor Freight – Your Paranormal Investigation Tool Headquarters

As I’ve mentioned, the Mrs. and I are trying to fortify our emergency supplies. We recently brought home a generator inherited from my father-in-law, an old 1500-watt unit. And while we were happy with the new acquisition, we soon learned it was only good for minor applications– tailgating, camping, backyard parties– so we decided to shop for a new, bigger generator and use this one as a supplement.

Now, I’ll study the HECK out of a product before I buy– professional reviews, customer comments and forums are must reading. If you’re like me, you think customer reviews are the best, especially when there are several of them for a product, and most of them agree. The Predator gas generators at Harbor Freight all have high-star ratings, so I dove into their reviews. Most of them were what you’d expect: “very pleased…” “well constructed…” “powered everything with no problem…” “works great and costs a lot less…”

But then, I stumbled on a particular review, and a chill crept up my spine. I turned down the AC and read on.

It was from the West Houston Paranormal Society, a dedicated group of otherworldly investigators who hunt and engage the unknown:

“We are West Houston Paranormal Society and this is our official generator. Running power where we need it in powerless buildings and houses that we investigate. It runs our equipment (cameras, audio, trip sensors, monitors, DVRs, computers, recharging packs, etc) throughout the house, as well as our trailer base command/review center. Fist pull operation, no drain or surges and super quiet…. the last thing we need is a loud generator interfering with our EVPs and video evidence, that is why we chose this one because that was high on our list of NEEDED features.” Caps included.

Why the Predator generator? Could it be it resonates with beings from across the veil? Or, is it the high-quality performance and low prices? Perhaps it’s all of the above.

The Mrs. and I ended up going with the Predator 8750 Watts Max/7000 Watts Rated Portable Generator, certified for California (4.5 stars, 13 reviews). It has the necessary power to juice our gas furnace, refrigerator freezer, AC, microwave, TV & lights… a little more than the “bare minimum” we had originally planned to get, but I’m sure we’ll be glad when the emergency (and the other stuff) goes down.

The Predator generator isn’t the only Harbor Freight product of choice among paranormal investigators. The Southeastern Paranormal Society, located in Salisbury, NC and Myrtle Beach, SC, and the good folks at IHuntGhosts.com, favor the motion-activated Bunker Hill Security 4-Camera Surveillance DVR when looking into poltergeists and sundry presences. A representative at the SPS commented:

“I bought this package to do surveillance for our paranormal research group. The cameras perform great in near pitch black conditions. Considering buying another system for our group.”

Everyone who’s seen those paranormal movies knows why this is an important contribution to the investigative process (on the other hand, I’m not sure I want to know what’s going on in my house when I’m asleep).

On My Para: The Paranormal Social Network, a forum member recently recommended the Cen-Tech Non-Contact Infrared Thermometer for measuring the ambient air around “cold” and “hot” spots. While so-called “professional” ambient air thermometers cost around $130, Harbor Freight’s is just $39.99. Boo-yah!

The owner of Paranormal Adventure Radio recommends the Bunker Hill Motion Detector as “good for basic investigations.”

Others have testified about using a wireless inspection camera ” for “tight spaces” and “a very good idea for a room that has noises coming from it with the door closed.” A ghost hunter who recommended the Cen-Tech Digital Inspection Camera was using his to check out a mausoleum he’d been curious about.

Finally, as Ghost Journeys advises in its Investigation Guidelines:

“Shop smart – save money. Check… Harbor Freight for mini LED flashlights, batteries and hard cases to tote your equipment.”

So, when it comes to quality tools at incredibly low prices… who you gonna call?

Spooky Halloween Costume Ideas

The Halloween season is upon us and if you’re like me, you still haven’t picked out a costume.  These days, it can be difficult to come up with something that’s both simple and unique, but we at Harbor Freight Tools are here to help!  And the best thing about picking up a “costume” at Harbor Freight, is that you can get use out of it year round.  What do I mean?  Well, let’s look at some options…

image_17240

Everyone likes a good mask.  Especially if you’re on the doorstep handing out candy to trick-or-treaters.  Luckily, Harbor Freight has a few pretty cool helmets and masks that provide a suitable creepy atmosphere for your Halloween evening.  Like the Abrasive Blasting Hood, for example.  I mean, look at this thing!  Not only is it kinda creepy, but the bright red and yellow markings make it visible and safe for nighttime wear.  And you can combine it with the Rubber Coated Blasting Gloves to enhance the look.

image_22051

Or maybe you’d opt for the Dual Cartridge Respirator.  For use in the shop, this handy mask filters out 95% of airborne particles.  But on Halloween night, it will provide 100% of nightmares after the neighborhood kids see you wearing it!  Comfortable and disposable, this is a great little mask that you can “bloody” up for All Hallow’s Eve and toss away or keep clean and use again in the future.  Either way, it’s a great addition to pretty much any costume for added spook factor.

image_17147

Going for the Leatherface look?  Well, you can terrify the town children with a simple Split Leather Welding Apron along with one of our several welding helmets.  For the best effect, I prefer the very traditional and basic auto-darkening welding helmet, but our helmets also come with several cool designs for extra style.  Check out the blue flame, racing stripe, or metal head designs to see which one sticks out for you!

image_14043

Another cool item that will enhance many costumes is the 22 ft. long Solar Rope Light.  Wrap this around a ghost or mummy costume for highlighted “creepy chains”, or perhaps around a few outdoor decorations for enhanced creepiness.  The rope light runs for a full 8 hours with a full charge so you can keep it going all Halloween night long!  In fact, the 50 long-life LED lamps automatically turn on at dusk so you can get the party started as soon as the sun goes down.
